- When I was growing up, so much of South Africa was hidden from a little white girl like me. Colourful, rural, black Africa didn't get a mention in the neat suburbs of Jo'burg. Now after being away for 10 years, I've come home courtesy of a fellowship from the Open Society Foundation for South Africa to discover what beats in the rural heartlands of this country.
